Hospital Internship Program - IATCM
This program is for those who are interested in working inside the different hospital departments or want to study and understand how to integrate different CAM technique within the western health system. Our hope is that our graduates can utilize this information and our experience in order to establish such a unit in their own countries or to improve their knowledge and experience within their privet clinics.
The program in each hospital consists of 5 full days a week and can last from 1 to 4 weeks according to the wishes of the participant.
Assaf Harofe Medical Center ITC - Israeli Tan Center

The Internship program will focus on learning the modalities of incorporating Chinese medicine methods, and complementary approaches along with conventional medicine into one whole treatment at the oncology department.

Assaf Ha rofeh Medical Center is a general academic hospital, affiliated to the Sackler Faculty of Medicine at Tel Aviv University.
It is located at the center of Israel, near Rishon Le Zion, 15 km east of Tel-Aviv, and 7km from the International Ben-Gurion Airport. It provides medical and surgical care for a population of 500,000 people.
SHIRAM Clinic
S.H.I.R.A.M (Hebrew: Integrated Medicine Services) was established at 1991 as an Outpatient clinic which is part of Assaf Ha rofeh Medical Center, it was the first medical establishment in Israel to offer CAM (complementary and alternative medicine) services as an integral part of its medical practice.
today it is the biggest and most established CAM service in a medical center in Israel, with approximately 10,000 treatments done each year.
In addition, every year at least one Israeli Chinese medicine school perform its students internship in SHIRAM clinic, and the advanced study unit in SHIRAM clinic offers year round courses in a variety of subjects of Chinese medicine as well as other CAM practices.
Integrated Medicine
A unique integration between chinese medicine and conventional western medicine is practiced at Assaf Ha rofeh Medical Center, where the Chinese medicine practitioners are part of the Outpatient clinics. Patients are referred by the western medicine Doctors to SHIRAM clinic for treatment.
In addition, Acupuncture is performed regularly in a few of the Inpatient departments by SHIRAM clinics` practitioners as well as in the ER.
Research
SHIRAM clinic is a leader in CAM research in Israel, with many of works done, and a “waiting list” of requests for future research from different departments of the Medical Center.
I.A.T.C.M
As a leader of integration in Israel, being a member of the Israeli Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine is a Prerequisite for Internship at Assaf Ha rofeh Medical Center (for students from Israel).
The Internship program
The Internship program will focus on treating Pain and Orthopedic disorders with Dr. Tan’s Balance Method.
SHIRAM clinic main specialty is treating pain and orthopedic disorders, but being a major clinic brings a variety of patients from all the fields of medicine.
The Internship program is offered on a weekly basis, each Intern may participate in one week or more.

As Assaf Ha rofeh Medical Center is located only 15 minutes drive from Tel Aviv Central bus station, accommodation is possible for all budgets in the many hotels throughout Tel Aviv.
The Medical Center also features the 4-star “Sadot hotel”, located on the 3rd floor of the stylish shopping centre, which is positioned at the entrance to the Medical Centre.
Restaurants are available at the Medical Center shopping centre.

Chinese Medicine Internship at Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center (Ichilov)
Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center (Ichilov) is the second largest and one of the most progressive full-service healthcare treatment and research institutions in Israel.
The Center of Complementary and Integrative Medicine is an integral part of the Oncology Division at the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center
Our center specializes in complementary treatments given in conjunction with the conventional protocols. The treatments are given in aim to reduce the severity of symptoms and the damage caused by the disease and the conventional treatments side effects. The treatments assist in strengthening and rebalancing the bodily systems and promoting maximum rehabilitation when conventional treatments are over.
Treatment Methods The Center of Complementary and Integrative Medicine offers a wide range of scientifically proven treatment methods, among them Chinese medicine, manual therapies like tuina, shiatsu and reflexology, body-mind treatments (Qi Kong, focusing, guided imagery and Byron Katie "The Work" meditation), and western and Chinese style herbal medicine. One of our special fields of expertise is integrative diet therapy based on Chinese medicine principles.
Research As part of its commitment to excellence, The Center of Complementary and Integrative Medicine initiates and participates in a variety of treatment modality research such as acupuncture as well as laboratory research focusing on active compounds found in herbal extractions.
The Internship program
The Internship program will focus on learning the modalities of incorporating Chinese medicine methods, and complementary approaches along with conventional medicine into one whole treatment. Aside of using acupuncture and manual technics, a special role will be given to utilizing the unique Chinese – integrative diet treatment and herbs, suitable for oncologic patients that we developed in the Center of Complementary and Integrative Medicine.

A second week of internship and studying could be organized by will. The schedule will be in the same structure as in the first week. The lectures this time will be focused on dipper levels of learning.

TCM Internship at Bnai Zion Medical Center
Bnai Zion Medical Center is located in northern Israel, in the city of Haifa, about 50 minutes from Tel Aviv. Haifa is known for its tourist attractions such as beautiful beaches, and the National Park of Mount Carmel.
Bnai Zion is the first western hospital which systematically integrated complementary medicine services for hospitalized patients with acute conditions. Our services are provided free of charge to these patients. During the four years of our activity, we have accumulated vast experience with treating patients in acute care settings who are in an extreme physical, mental and spiritual challenge.
The Internship program
The Rotation at Bnai Zion will last for a period of one or two weeks, 5 days a week and about 6 hours each day. Most of the learning will be by observation at the various hospital departments where we provide treatment: Cardiology, Urology, General & Pediatric Surgery, Surgery preparation room (Holding room), and at the Post Anesthesia Care Unit.
The teaching during the Internship will focus on the following aspects:
Working with conventional hospital teams; understanding the structure of the health system; the role of each specialty (physicians, nurses…) in this system; communication and exchange of information between the conventional and complementary medicine staff; understanding the relevant information from patient medical files; indications and contraindications for acupuncture in the hospital setting; effective implementation of acupuncture treatments .
Interns will observe operations in order to understand the processes that affect hospitalized patients, and their influence on Qi (Tendino-muscular meridians, the effect of drugs on Qi, etc).
Each week there will be a lecture about topics of our specialties such as preparation for surgery, rehabilitation after hospitalization, how to work with medical staff, methods of treating common symptoms in hospitalization (pain, preventing drains, peri-operative anxiety, etc).
The program will provide the interns with specific treatment tools from TCM for common symptoms of hospitalized patients: Characterization and treatment of the types of anxiety by "Five elements"; pain treatment by eight principles diagnosis and "Meridian balance" method; comprehensive diagnosis of the hospitalized individual by "Stems and branches"; Understanding the interactions between drugs and diagnostic tools of TCM (tongue, pulse, body diagnosis, etc).
Emphasis will be given on the role of acupuncturists in rehabilitation after hospitalization.
Special highlight will be provided on interdisciplinary complementary medicine treatments, such as integrating acupuncture with guided Imagery, hypnosis and touch therapies.
Additional information
The interns will not insert needles to patients; however they will have full clinical discussions before and after treatment.
Third party insurance is provided under responsibility of the hospital.
The main language of the program will be English. The staff can also offer explanations in French, Russian, Spanish, and Flemish.
During the program there will be an organized day tour around the city of Haifa which be led by the staff. There will be an Opportunity to visit unique Chinese medicine and integrative oncology practices in Haifa. There will also be an optional half day tour in "Bara" company which specializes in preparation of Chinese formulas.
The Participants will receive guidance and help finding a residence in Haifa during their rotation. The range of prices for bed & breakfast hotels across Haifa is from 40€ to 80€. Lunch will be provided in the hospital with a discount.
Tuition fee
300 € per internship week. For each additional day (if requested) the charge will be 125€. The payment covers only the internship, other expenses like residence, meals etc. are not included.
